Indoorclimate,psychosocialworkenvironmentandsymptomsinopen-planofficesIntroductionOneofthefirstbuildingswithopenofficespacewasdesignedbyFrankLloydWrightin1904(Sundstrom,1986)intheUS.Theofficehadthetraditionalclassroomdesignwithtablesinrowsandbecamesoonwidelyusedinofficebuildings.However,thisofficetypewasmainlyfortheclericalworkerswhereasmanagershadtheirownprivateoffice.ThelandscapeofficeorBurolandschaftwhichoriginatedinGermanybecameverypopularinthe1960s(Sundstrom,1986).Theoriginallandscapeofficewasanentirelyopenspacewithoutprivateofficesevenformanagers.Theworkplaceswerearrangedinsmallgroupsforconvenientworkflowandcommunicationandthetraditionalclassroomdesignwasgivenup.EventhoughthefirstGermanofficeshadnopartitionwallsbetweenthedifferentworkgroupsorworkplacesthecharacteristicfeaturesofthelandscapeofficesoonbecamethesemi-highpartitionsintheofficedesign.However,manycompaniesbegantoadopttheideaofopenofficesduetothelowercostratherthantheorganizationofworkandfacilitationofinternalcommunication.Theopenofficerequiredfewers...
