NEGOTIATINGABETTERFUTURE:HOWINTERPERSONALSKILLSFACILITATEINTERGENERATIONALINVESTMENT∗NAVAASHRAFNATALIEBAUCORINNELOWKATHLEENMCGINNUsingarandomizedcontrolledtrial,westudywhetheranegotiationskillstrainingcanimprovegirls’educationaloutcomesinalow-resourceenvironment.Wefindthatanegotiationtraininggiventoeighth-gradeZambiangirlssignifi-cantlyimprovededucationaloutcomesoverthenextthreeyears,andtheseeffectsdidnotfadeout.Tobetterunderstandmechanisms,weestimatetheeffectsoftwoalternativetreatments.Negotiationhadmuchstrongereffectsthananin-formationaltreatment,whichhadnoeffect.Atreatmentdesignedtohavemoretraditionalgirls’empowermenteffectshaddirectionallypositivebutinsignificanteducationaleffects.Relativetothistreatment,negotiationincreasedenrollmentinhigher-qualityschoolingandhadlargereffectsforhigh-abilitygirls.Thesefindingsareconsistentwithamodelinwhichnegotiationallowsgirlstoresolveincompletecontractingproblemswiththeirparents,yieldingincreasededucationalinvest-mentforthosewhoexperiencesufficiently...
