He was employed as a research officer at University College London, before moving to the University of Lancaster first as lecturer and then as senior lecturer. He is now Professor of Sociology at the University of Lancaster. Professor Abercrombie has written books and articles on the sociology of knowledge, theory of culture, popular culture, sociological theory and class theory. These include Class, Structure and Knowledge and, with J. Urry, Capital, Labour and the Middle Classes. With other members of the Department of Sociology at Lancaster, he has written Contemporary British Society.Stephen Hill was born in 1946 and educated at Balliol College, Oxford, and the London School of Economics where he completed his Ph.D. in 1973.
